Targeted MRI Scanning
for Early Detection

Smarter screening starts with a targeted approach. Instead of scanning the body broadly, targeted MRI scanning focuses on specific areas of the body.

When you book a targeted MRI, you will first meet with a doctor who will review your medical history and test results
before your screening. From there, we may tailor the sequence of your scans to help produce more detailed results,
while minimising the risk of incidental findings.

The result is a clear picture of your health that will inform your ongoing care

Why early detection matters

Around 80% of Australians live with at least one long-term health condition, and almost half have a chronic condition.

Many of these conditions are easier to manage in the long term if they are detected early. By doing targeted testing, your doctor will be able to check high-risk areas before symptoms appear. This makes earlier treatment and clearer next steps possible.

You can book a targeted MRI at our clinics in Sydney and Melbourne. It includes a physician consultation before and after imaging.

What is a targeted MRI scan?

A targeted MRI is a non-invasive scan that produces detailed images of organs, tissues, and blood vessels. Unlike a full-body scan, which captures everything without a clear focus, targeted MRI uses organ-specific sequences designed to detect relevant pathology with accuracy and clarity.

Prior to a targeted MRI, your doctor will consult with you to better understand your family history. They will also conduct a skin check. Depending on which program you select, you might also undergo additional testing, such as biomarker testing, cardiovascular checks such as ECGs, ultrasound imaging, and any other tests deemed relevant (including another MRI).

After your scans, your doctor will review the results.

Go beyond a standard health check

A targeted MRI provides detailed, high-resolution images of specific organs and tissues, helping detect subtle changes before symptoms appear. Unlike full-body scans, targeted imaging is guided by clinical evidence, so that every result has a purpose.

Early detection

Identify high-impact conditions before symptoms develop

No Ionising Radiation

MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves, not x-rays

Clinically Guided

Imaging sequences are tailored to detect what matters most

Meaningful results

Avoid unnecessary follow-ups from incidental findings

Focus on key areas

While it might sound appealing to scan the entire body, it’s a less effective technique for finding key medical information. It can also lead to vague data that’s not useful, and possibly false positives.

When there are clear parameters for your scan, based on physician-led testing and medical history, your MRI can focus on the specific area that needs attention. This makes the results more relevant to your individual health and more likely to identify information that supports diagnosis.

  • Focused on relevance: Scans are chosen based on your health risks and history
  • Smarter scanning: Imaging sequences are designed for accuracy and detail
  • Endorsed by experts: The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists advises against routine full-body MRI because it is more likely to cause confusion than clarity
  • Guided by doctors: We know what conditions we’re looking for and design protocols accordingly

Why We Don’t Recommend Whole Body MRI

Whole body MRI might seem like a comprehensive option, but in practice it often identifies incidental findings that are not clinically important. These “false alarms” can lead to unnecessary tests, extra costs, and increased anxiety.

That’s why leading medical bodies such as the RANZCR recommend against full-body MRI for people without symptoms. At HealthScreen, we focus on targeted MRI scans that:

  • Apply the right imaging sequences for specific health concerns
  • Deliver more accurate, clinically useful insights
  • Reduce unnecessary investigations and overdiagnosis

In other words, it’s not about scanning more. It’s about scanning smarter.
