What Is Preventive Health
Medically reviewed by Dr David Badov, Medical Director, MBBS FRACP

Preventive health means finding and managing risk before it becomes a diagnosis. In practice, that spans two different models: traditional, age-triggered screening (a bowel-screening kit at 50, a skin check when something looks different), and comprehensive diagnostic programs that screen across multiple body systems in a single visit, regardless of age-based triggers. The second model exists specifically to catch what the first model’s timing would miss.

How does this differ from a standard health check, and how often should you go?

Preventive health spans two different approaches. One is reactive and age-triggered, a bowel-screening kit at 50, a skin check when something looks different, and it only catches what’s already been flagged by your age or a visible symptom.

The other is comprehensive: a single visit that screens across multiple body systems at once, regardless of age, built specifically to catch what the first approach’s timing would miss.

As a general guide, that comprehensive screen is worth doing every two to three years.

Who’s behind HealthScreen’s approach?

HealthScreen’s programs are physician-led, overseen by Medical Director Dr David Badov (MBBS FRACP, co-founder).

Where should I start?

If you’re new to preventive health, the practical starting point is a comprehensive baseline, one thorough diagnostic session that gives a clear picture across the areas most likely to matter (cardiovascular, cancer risk, metabolic health), rather than assembling that picture from separate, disconnected tests over time.

“Preventive health works because it catches things early, often before there are any symptoms at all, which is exactly when treatment is most effective. Waiting for age-based triggers, one test at 40, another at 50, means you’re only ever looking for one thing at a time, on someone else’s timeline. A comprehensive baseline gives you the full picture at once, instead of leaving parts of it to wait for a birthday.”

FAQs

What’s the difference between preventive health and just living healthily?

Preventive health is specifically about structured screening and risk detection. Lifestyle habits matter, but they don’t replace the diagnostic side.
